Vegan Pear Crumble

Is there a more comforting dessert recipe than crumble? This pear based twist on a classic recipe couldn’t be easier and is delicious hot as it is cold.

Crumble is one of those classically British desserts that ticks the box of being both simple and delicious. I love fruit based desserts and crumble is one of the easiest recipes that can fix that craving!

This recipe uses pears but crumbles can be made using a range of fruits. Pears are massively underrated and deserve much more love! Waiting on pears to ripen before you can enjoy them can take a while, but baking them ensures you always get tender delicious pears.

So, why not try this equally delicious alternative to your usual apple crumble?

Where did Crumble come from?

Crumbles became popular in Britain during World War II. Shortages of pastry ingredients due to rationing necessitated an alternative to pies. Crumble topping required less flour, fat and sugar than pastry, so quickly filled that gap. While rationing ended, the popularity of crumbles did not, and so this recipe prevailed to become a British classic. If nothing is more classic American than pie, then surely nothing is more classic British than a Crumble.

Given it’s adaptive history, Crumble is a dessert that has lent itself to vegan adaptations. This crumble recipe is as delicious as it is simple, so why not give it a go?

 So, what do you need?

All you need for this recipe is:

Fruit Filling Ingredients:

  • 8 Pears
  • 1 tablespoon of Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of Lemon Juice

Crumble Ingredients:

  • 100g Vegan Butter
  • 100g Plain Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Mixed Spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon of Nutmeg
  • 80g Brown Sugar
  • 50g Oats
  • 50g Pecans

How to Make a Vegan Pear Crumble

Step 1 – Add flour, mixed spice and nutmeg to a large bowl. Then add vegan butter and rub together using your fingertips, until the mixture forms small clusters.

Step 2 – Add and mix in brown sugar, oats and pecans.

Step 3 – Set aside crumble topping. If crumble topping is clumping together, put it in the fridge in the mean time to harden.

Step 4 – Preheat the oven to 180°C.

Step 5 – Wash and peel pears, then slice.

Step 6 – Mix pears with sugar and lemon juice, making sure to coat all the pear slices thoroughly.

Step 7 – Divide pear slices between 6 ramekins, then top evenly with crumble topping. Sprinkle sugar lightly over the top of each.

Step 8 – Place in oven and bake for 35-45 minutes, or until crumble topping begins to brown. Be careful removing from the oven as the ramekins will be hot.

Step 9 – Enjoy hot or allow to cool for later!

Top Tips

  1. Instead of individual ramekins, use one ovenproof dish for a classic sized crumble. However, these individual ramekins make for a portable dessert than can be taken to work or served at picnics easily!
  2. While many crumble recipes use more sugar for their fruit filling element, this is often unnecessary given how sweet the fruit naturally is! Using only a tablespoon of sugar in your fruit mix is an easy way to reduce the sugar needed for your crumble, without sacrificing flavour.
